Homecoming!

When you are a child you are driven or taken everywhere. You don’t really have a choice on where you are going or why you are going. I remember taking trips between Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma City quite often when I was a kid. My dad was a pastor in Tulsa and worked for the Oklahoma Conference in Oklahoma City. My grandparents happened to live there as well. So, we went once, sometimes twice a week. The trip is about an hour and a half to two hours, which for a kid is an eternity.

I began memorizing the landmarks and timing between the two places. This was way before maps on your phone to show your progress, but I knew where we were by the red tower or the milk factory with the cow statues, or the strange shaped hill. Day or night I would see the radio and T.V. towers of Oklahoma City on the horizon and knew we were 20 minutes from our destination.

There is anticipation, an energy that comes over you when you are nearing your destination that can be so great. The end of a journey when you can see the landmarks can be very sweet.

The trip back home seems to always begin with some negative anticipation of the distance you must now travel. The payoff for me was always the landmarks I knew by heart as we approached my familiar stomping ground. I had many more landmarks on the way home. I knew the 10 minute, 5 minute and 2 minute landmarks and then the feeling that you get when you pull into your own neighborhood, hear the keys turn in the lock and smell the familiar smell of your home; the place where you live.

I tend to have similar feelings when I go back to places where I grew up, or cherished in my past, brought on by the familiar sights, sounds and smells. The people who have changed but at the same time are still the same. There’s nothing like it.

This coming August 4th is Sligo’s 9th Annual Homecoming. Our intention each year is to Reclaim, Reconnect and Revive. We have all been on a continuous journey through this life of discipleship. We know and are looking forward to the landmarks until we are able to go home to heaven together. Our hope is that whether you’ve been gone for a while or you’re still growing in our Sligo community, we want you to come and enjoy this special Sabbath together. We want you to walk through our doors and enjoy and celebrate what is familiar and the amazing new sights, sounds and experiences that have been created over time.

We won’t call Sligo Church heaven, but we know we’re a bit closer to heaven as we use this community as one of our favorite landmarks.

God Bless you and we hope to see you at Sligo Church for Homecoming 2018!
