These days many of us are glued to our television sets watching all the news that is hitting the 24 hour cable and local news stations. The big stories saturating the media are about every move the presidential candidates are making and every word they are saying. It’s election year and we are listening to these politicians make their pitch for your vote. The end came for some candidates and they were forced to drop out of the race. Others are hanging on by a very thin thread. On each side of the political spectrum front-runners have emerged, frontrunners with a faithful following, faithful followers who hinge on every word, every move, and every speech that is given by their candidate.
No matter what is being said about his or her candidate, a faithful follower does not budge from faithfully following their candidate. I heard an interview with a faithful follower who commented that he didn’t even know much of what his candidate stood for but he had heard a speech that moved him to follow him. Another commented that she liked her candidate’s position on several issues and believed in all the candidate had to say. I don’t think that I had ever seen such faithful following for someone running for the highest office in the USA. It’s unbelievable how fanatical people are about their candidate.
You might not want to read this one! Am I am a faithful follower? Do I believe in something so strongly that I will not budge no matter what is said about me or the one I choose to follow? We should be such individuals, people that others can call faithful followers. We need to be faithful followers of Jesus! But why are we not such followers? Why does it seem that we are so easily swayed away from faithfully following our King and Savior? The apostle Paul wrote, “Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful” (1 Cor. 4:1-2, New KJV). Are you found faithful? If yes, faithful to whom or what? We should all strive to be called faithful followers of Jesus! Our faith should be unshakable! We should be proclaiming the good news of the gospel to everybody we see; we should talk about Jesus with passion! No matter what anyone says about Him, we should be seen as His faithful followers.
My parents told me that I was a stubborn youngster growing up, that even though I was told something was red, if I believed it was blue I would stubbornly stick to my word. This of course got me into many jams along the way, not only with my parents but also with others. You see, Jesus is worth following faithfully, because unlike politicians, His Word is truth and trustworthy. People will follow that which they see as trustworthy and worth following. This weekend we have an opportunity to help others be faithful followers as we remember what Jesus did for us. Someone who gave His life for us, so that we may have eternal life, who died so we don’t have to, and came back to life so we may live with Him forever, is more than enough to make us faithful followers of His. But most of all, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, for whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.”(John 3:16 NIV). This alone should make us want to be the most faithful followers around! I pray that when I see my Jesus he can say to me “well done my good and faithful servant…” (Matthew 25:23 NIV).
